What certifications do phlebotomists need?

Phlebotomy certification requirements vary by state. There is no single national mandate, but the following certifications are widely recognized:

National Healthcareer Association (NHA):

  • CPT – Certified Phlebotomy Technician
  • Most widely held certification in the U.S.
  • American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP):

  • PBT – Phlebotomy Technician (ASCP)
  • Preferred by hospital labs and large health systems
  • American Medical Technologists (AMT):

  • RPT – Registered Phlebotomy Technician
  • American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT):

  • CPT – Certified Phlebotomy Technician (ASPT)
  • State-specific requirements:

  • California, Louisiana, Nevada, and Washington require state licensure in addition to national certification
  • Most other states treat certification as voluntary but professionally expected
  • Additional qualifications to look for:

  • DOT (Department of Transportation) certification for drug and alcohol testing
  • HIPAA compliance training
  • CPR/BLS certification
  • OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen training
