Does Medicare cover mobile phlebotomy?

Medicare coverage for mobile phlebotomy depends on the patient's situation.

Lab tests (Medicare Part B):

Medicare Part B covers clinical laboratory services when ordered by a physician. The diagnostic lab tests themselves are covered at 100% (no copay, no deductible) when medically necessary, regardless of whether they were collected at home or at a lab.

Specimen collection/travel fee (Medicare Part B):

Medicare does cover a specimen collection fee (CPT code 36415 + G0001 for home collection) for homebound patients when:

  • The patient is confined to home (medically homebound status)
  • The collection is medically necessary and ordered by a physician
  • The collection is performed by a Medicare-enrolled provider
  • Medicare Advantage (Part C):

Coverage varies by plan. Many Medicare Advantage plans have expanded home health benefits that may include mobile phlebotomy. Check your specific plan's benefit summary or call your plan.

    Documentation required:

To bill Medicare for a home draw, providers need documentation of homebound status. Patients who are not formally homebound may still be able to use mobile phlebotomy for the lab test portion, but the travel fee may not be covered.
