💉The Blood Draw Process

How are specimens handled to ensure accuracy?

Specimen integrity is the foundation of accurate lab results. Mobile phlebotomists follow strict handling protocols:

Pre-analytical controls:

  • Correct tube type for each test (red top, lavender, green, blue — each has different additives)
  • Correct fill volume (under-filled tubes can affect clotting factors and dilution ratios)
  • Correct inversion count (to mix additives)
  • Correct processing time (centrifugation within the test's stability window)
  • Chain of custody:

  • Every specimen is labeled with patient identifiers at the time of collection, never before
  • Transport bags are sealed and logged
  • Handoff documentation is maintained
  • Temperature maintenance:

  • Insulated transport bags maintain appropriate temperature
  • Cold packs or warmers used for temperature-sensitive tests
  • Time from collection to lab receipt is tracked
  • Quality control at the lab:

  • Specimens are inspected for hemolysis (red or pink discoloration from broken red cells), lipemia (cloudiness from fat), and icterus (yellow from bilirubin)
  • Specimens that fail QC are flagged and recollection may be requested
  • If results seem inconsistent with clinical expectations, a pre-analytical issue (collection, handling, or transport) is often the first thing ruled out.
