💉The Blood Draw Process

What should I do after my blood draw?

Post-draw care is minimal for most patients. Here are the recommended steps:

Immediately after:

  • Apply firm pressure to the puncture site for 2–5 minutes (or until bleeding stops)
  • Keep the bandage on for at least 30–60 minutes
  • Do not rub the site — this can cause bruising
  • For the rest of the day:

  • Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous arm exercise for the next few hours (prevents hematoma)
  • Eat a snack if you fasted, especially something with carbohydrates and protein
  • Drink plenty of fluids to replace blood volume and prevent lightheadedness
  • Signs that are normal:

  • Small bruise at the puncture site
  • Mild tenderness for 24–48 hours
  • Slight lightheadedness immediately after (especially if you fasted)
  • Signs to watch for (uncommon):

  • Significant swelling or hardening under the skin (hematoma) — apply a cold compress
  • Excessive bleeding that does not stop with pressure
  • Numbness or persistent pain in the arm (rare nerve irritation)
  • Fever within 24 hours (infection, very rare)
  • Contact your provider if you experience anything concerning.
