Can mobile phlebotomy be used for INR/warfarin monitoring?

Yes. INR monitoring is one of the most common use cases for mobile phlebotomy, particularly for elderly patients, homebound patients, and those with mobility limitations.

Why INR monitoring is ideal for mobile phlebotomy:

  • Patients on warfarin (Coumadin) need frequent INR checks โ€” sometimes weekly or biweekly
  • Repeated clinic trips are burdensome, costly, and risky for frail patients
  • INR values are time-sensitive (a high INR indicates bleeding risk; a low one indicates clot risk)
  • Home blood draws allow convenient, consistent monitoring without disruption
  • How it works:

  • The physician orders a PT/INR blood test
  • The mobile phlebotomist collects a blue-top (sodium citrate) tube
  • Specimens are transported to the lab promptly โ€” PT/INR has strict stability requirements (specimen must typically be tested within 4 hours of collection or centrifuged quickly)
  • Results go to the managing physician who adjusts the warfarin dose
  • Point-of-care INR:

Some mobile phlebotomists carry CoaguChek or similar point-of-care INR devices that provide results in under 2 minutes. This is especially valuable when the patient's physician needs same-day results for dosing decisions. Ask specifically if your provider offers POC INR.
