🧪Specimen Types & Special Tests

Can mobile phlebotomy support genetic testing?

Yes. Mobile phlebotomists can collect the specimens required for most genetic tests.

Specimen types for genetic testing:

  • Blood (EDTA tube / lavender top) — used for most comprehensive genetic panels, pharmacogenomic testing, hereditary disease panels, prenatal cfDNA
  • Buccal swab (cheek swab) — DNA collection for ancestry testing, carrier screening, some pharmacogenomics; patients can sometimes do this themselves, but some labs require a witnessed or collected swab
  • Saliva collection kits — for consumer genomics (23andMe, AncestryDNA, etc.) — patients self-collect at home
  • Types of genetic tests a mobile draw can support:

  • Hereditary cancer panels (BRCA1/BRCA2, Lynch syndrome)
  • Pharmacogenomics (how you metabolize medications)
  • Prenatal cfDNA screening (non-invasive prenatal testing / NIPT)
  • Cardiovascular genetic panels
  • Carrier screening for inherited conditions
  • Whole exome or genome sequencing panels
  • Special considerations:

  • Genetic testing often requires genetic counseling consent
  • Some labs require specific collection kits to be used (they send them to you in advance)
  • Results can take 2–4 weeks for complex genomic panels
  • Confirm the lab's requirements with your ordering provider before scheduling the mobile draw
