Can mobile phlebotomy be used for pre-employment drug testing?

Yes. Mobile phlebotomy services can conduct pre-employment drug and alcohol screening, including both urine and blood-based panels.

Types of drug testing mobile phlebotomists can support:

  • Urine drug screens (most common for employment) — specimen collection only; analysis done at a certified lab
  • Blood drug screens — for quantitative testing or when a urine sample cannot be obtained
  • Oral fluid (saliva) testing — increasingly common alternative to urine
  • Hair follicle testing — some mobile phlebotomists can collect hair specimens
  • DOT-regulated testing:

For companies in Department of Transportation-regulated industries (trucking, airlines, railroads, pipelines), drug and alcohol testing must follow strict federal protocols (49 CFR Part 40). Only DOT-qualified collectors can perform these collections. Ask specifically if the mobile phlebotomist holds DOT collector certification.

    Non-DOT employment testing:

For general employment (non-DOT), there is more flexibility in testing methods, though using a certified collector and SAMHSA-certified lab is standard practice for defensible results.

    How to arrange:

Employers contract with a mobile phlebotomy company directly. The company sends a qualified collector to the job site or the new hire's location. Results are sent to a Medical Review Officer (MRO) who certifies the result to the employer.
