📋Preparing for Your Appointment

What should I tell the phlebotomist before my blood draw?

Before your draw begins, share the following information with your phlebotomist:

Medical history relevant to the draw:

  • Any history of fainting (vasovagal syncope) during blood draws
  • Blood clotting disorders or bleeding disorders
  • Blood thinners or anticoagulants (warfarin, Eliquis, aspirin, clopidogrel)
  • History of difficult veins or multiple failed prior draws
  • Lymphedema or mastectomy (draw should avoid the affected arm)
  • AV fistula or dialysis access sites (never draw from these)
  • Allergies to latex, tape, or antiseptic (chlorhexidine, iodine)
  • Current medications:

All prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements — some affect test results.

    Preferred arm/vein site:

If you know one arm is easier than the other, say so. The phlebotomist will still assess both.

    Fasting status:

Confirm whether you have fasted and for how long, especially if fasting tests are included.

    Lab order details:

Have your lab requisition ready and confirm the name of the laboratory the specimens should be sent to.
