Do I need a doctor's order for mobile phlebotomy?

In most cases, yes — a physician's order (lab requisition) is required for mobile phlebotomy, just as it is for any diagnostic lab test.

When a doctor's order is required:

  • Standard diagnostic testing billed to insurance
  • Clinical trial or research specimen collection
  • Tests ordered by a specialist or hospital system
  • Occupational health or pre-employment testing (employer issues the order)
  • When a doctor's order may NOT be required:

  • Direct-to-consumer (DTC) lab testing — some mobile phlebotomy services work with DTC platforms (like Ulta Lab Tests, Any Lab Test Now, Everly Health) where you self-order tests online and arrange phlebotomy separately
  • Wellness screenings at corporate events (employer arranges)
  • Research participation with IRB-approved protocols
  • How to get a lab order:

Contact your primary care physician, specialist, or telehealth provider. Many telehealth platforms can issue lab requisitions quickly online. If you do not have a provider, services like Ro, Hims/Hers, and other telehealth platforms can often order labs.
