How does mobile phlebotomy work?
Mobile phlebotomy follows the same clinical process as a traditional lab visit, but the phlebotomist comes to you.
Step 1 – Get a lab order. Your doctor, specialist, or telehealth provider writes a lab requisition order specifying which tests to run.
Step 2 – Book an appointment. You or your provider contacts a mobile phlebotomy service and schedules a convenient time. Many services offer same-day or next-day availability.
Step 3 – The phlebotomist arrives. The technician shows up at your location with all supplies. They confirm your identity, review the lab order, and prep the draw site.
Step 4 – Specimen collection. Blood is drawn (venipuncture) or other specimens collected (urine, saliva, swab). The process usually takes 5–15 minutes.
Step 5 – Transport and processing. Specimens are labeled, secured in biohazard transport bags, and delivered to the designated laboratory following chain-of-custody protocols.
Step 6 – Results. The lab processes specimens and sends results to your ordering provider, typically within 24–72 hours depending on the test.
