How do mobile phlebotomists establish lab partnerships?

A lab partnership — also called a contracted collector or standing requisition agreement — is the arrangement between a mobile phlebotomist and a laboratory that allows the phlebotomist to collect specimens and have the lab process and bill them.

Major commercial labs:

Quest Diagnostics:

  • Apply to become a Quest PSC (Patient Service Center) contractor or a contracted mobile collector
  • Quest has formal onboarding with training, supply agreements, and billing setup
  • Contact your regional Quest account manager
  • LabCorp:

  • Similar process — contact LabCorp's regional account team
  • LabCorp has a contractor/affiliate network for mobile collection
  • Independent and regional labs:

  • Often easier to partner with, especially for new mobile phlebotomists
  • Negotiate a supply agreement and billing arrangement directly
  • Examples: BioReference, Sonic Healthcare affiliates, hospital reference labs
  • What the agreement typically covers:

  • Supply provisioning (tubes, requisitions, biohazard bags)
  • Billing arrangement (who bills whom, CPT codes)
  • Specimen transport schedule and pickup coordination
  • Quality and training requirements
  • Result reporting pathway
  • For direct-to-consumer platforms:

Some mobile phlebotomists partner with DTC ordering platforms (Ulta Lab Tests, Any Lab Test Now, etc.) as independent contractors — these platforms connect patients who have pre-ordered tests with local collectors.
