How do I become a mobile phlebotomist?

Becoming a mobile phlebotomist requires the same foundational training as any phlebotomist, with additional operational considerations for working independently.

Step 1: Complete a phlebotomy training program

Enroll in a phlebotomy certificate program at a community college, vocational school, or accredited online program (with hands-on clinical component). Programs typically take 4–12 weeks.

Step 2: Get certified

Pass a national phlebotomy certification exam:

  • NHA CPT (National Healthcareer Association Certified Phlebotomy Technician)
  • ASCP PBT (American Society for Clinical Pathology)
  • AMT RPT (American Medical Technologists Registered Phlebotomy Technician)
  • Step 3: Gain experience

Most new phlebotomists work in a hospital, clinic, or patient service center first to build confidence and technique. 6–12 months of experience is recommended before going mobile solo.

Step 4: Set up your mobile operation

  • Establish a lab partnership (apply to become a contracted collector for Quest, LabCorp, or an independent lab)
  • Purchase supplies (needles, tubes, biohazard bags, transport cooler, centrifuge if needed)
  • Get professional liability insurance
  • Comply with state-specific requirements (licensure, business registration)
  • Get your vehicle set up for specimen transport
  • Step 5: List your services

Create a profile on MobilePhlebotomy.app to connect with patients and healthcare organizations in your area.
