🔬Lab & Specimen Handling

How much blood is drawn per test?

Volume varies by panel. A standard routine blood draw is typically 10–30 mL. Your lab order specifies exact volumes.

Typical volumes:

  • Single tube (CBC or CMP): 3–6 mL
  • Routine comprehensive panel (5–6 tubes): 20–35 mL total
  • Large research or specialty draw (10+ tubes): Up to 50–60 mL
  • To put this in perspective, the average adult has about 5 liters (5,000 mL) of blood. Even a large 60 mL draw represents only about 1.2% of total blood volume — well within the safe range for healthy adults.
