🔬Lab & Specimen Handling

Can providers label samples?

Yes. Providers label specimens according to lab requirements at the time of collection.

Proper labeling includes:

  • Patient full name
  • Date of birth
  • Collection date and time
  • Phlebotomist identifier
  • Tube type (often color-coded)
  • Lab-specific barcode (if provided by the lab)
  • Labels are applied at the patient's side, never before or after the draw. Mislabeled specimens are a common rejection cause and a patient safety concern — proper labeling is a core phlebotomy competency.
