How much dry ice is needed for frozen specimen shipping?

Dry ice quantity depends on shipping duration and specimen volume. Providers experienced in frozen shipping will assess appropriately.

General guidelines:

  • Overnight (next-day) shipment: 3–5 lbs of dry ice typically sufficient for small specimen volume
  • 2-day shipment: 5–10 lbs recommended
  • Multiple tubes or larger volumes: More dry ice needed to maintain temperature
  • FedEx requires a minimum of 1 lb of dry ice for regulated dry ice shipments and specific labeling. Providers who regularly handle frozen specimens understand these requirements.
