🔬Lab & Specimen Handling

Can blood samples be frozen?

Yes. Providers with appropriate equipment can freeze samples for tests requiring frozen specimens.

Freezing is required for some analytes that are unstable at refrigerated temperatures, including certain hormones (ACTH, renin, aldosterone), plasma amino acids, and many molecular markers. Frozen specimens must be maintained at -20°C or -80°C (depending on the test) and shipped with dry ice.
