🔬Lab & Specimen Handling

Why do labs request multiple tubes?

Different tests require different anticoagulants or tube additives. Some require separate samples to avoid cross-contamination.

Blood tube types differ in what they contain:

  • SST (gold): Clot activator + gel separator — for serum-based tests
  • EDTA (lavender): EDTA anticoagulant — for CBC and molecular testing
  • Sodium citrate (blue): Citrate anticoagulant in specific 9:1 ratio — for coagulation
  • Lithium heparin (green): Heparin anticoagulant — for plasma chemistry
  • Mixing anticoagulants would invalidate many tests, so each tube type is collected separately and used for specific analyses.
