🔬Lab & Specimen Handling

How soon must samples be processed after collection?

Processing timelines depend on the test and tube type. Most serum tubes must be processed within 30–60 minutes of collection.

General guidelines:

  • SST (gold) tubes for serum: Centrifuge within 30–60 minutes of collection after allowing 30 minutes for clotting
  • EDTA (lavender) tubes: Stable at room temperature for 24–48 hours for most CBC parameters
  • Sodium citrate (blue) tubes: Centrifuge within 4 hours for coagulation tests
  • Frozen specimens: Must be frozen as directed and remain frozen through shipping
  • Always check test-specific stability requirements with the ordering lab.
